Curriculum
A versatile elementary educator
In UB’s Elementary Education program you will become a versatile educator equipped with the necessary skills to teach a range of students and subjects. Elementary Education is one of the most popular certification programs in the School of Education, offering the courses and classroom experience you need to successfully teach in elementary classrooms.
Teaching across subjects
You will gain extensive knowledge about teaching elementary subjects including literacy, numeracy, and the critical thinking and soft skills that help children succeed. Elementary educators empower young minds through accessible and engaging instruction grounded in interdisciplinary learning.
Planning and assessment
Candidates will be prepared to plan lessons and units according to state and national guidelines, and to demonstrate a thorough background in concepts of reading and the ability to teach reading and evaluate student performance in reading.
The required assessments
Candidates will exhibit appropriate content knowledge of mathematics, language arts, social studies, and science commensurate with the Praxis II exam for elementary school teachers, and will pass the Praxis II exam, the CT Reading Assessment exam, and the edTPA performance assessment.
High leverage practices
Candidates will exhibit high leverage teaching practices and differentiate curriculum for various special needs students.

The master’s in Elementary Education degree at UB gives you the opportunity to put these skills to work through our tuition-paid internship or hands-on field experience. We work with more than 60 districts throughout Connecticut and New York to provide you with practical experiences in a local school. By completing this internship you can save over $25,000 in tuition money, all while earning relevant, day-to-day experience working in a school. Interns will complete their degree over the course of one school year, taking classes 2-3 evenings per week. 33 credits of master’s level coursework must be completed during the two-semester internship.

Program prerequisites
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university or recognized international institution
- Cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 (B) or higher. Applicants whose cumulative GPA falls between 2.67 (B-) and 3.0 (B) will be considered for admission on a provisional basis.
- A master’s degree from a regionally accredited university is required for the Sixth-Year program.
