Curriculum
Preparing literacy leaders
The Literacy Education Sixth-Year Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) program Reading and Language Arts Consultant (097) certification is designed to prepare educators for leadership positions in elementary, middle, and secondary schools. The program is aligned with the International Reading Association’s standards for the preparation of reading professionals.
The literacy leader’s role
The program prepares the student for the role of a literacy leader who can organize, supervise, and enhance literacy programs; coordinate the instruction and assessment of students in reading and language arts; guide, improve, and enrich reading and language arts instruction in all content areas; and collaborate across the school.
Foundations and instruction
Literacy professionals understand the theoretical and evidence-based foundations of reading and writing processes and instruction, and use instructional approaches, materials, and an integrated, comprehensive, balanced curriculum to support learning in reading and writing.
Assessment
Literacy professionals use a variety of assessment tools and practices to plan and evaluate effective reading and writing instruction.
A literate environment
Literacy professionals create and engage their students in literacy practices that develop awareness, understanding, respect, and a valuing of differences in our society, create a literate environment that fosters reading and writing, and recognize the importance of professional learning and leadership as a career-long effort and responsibility.
Admission requirements
How to apply
Applicants must have completed an appropriate master’s degree, must have a valid teaching certificate or be eligible for Connecticut certification in elementary, middle, or secondary education, must have completed a minimum of thirty months of successful classroom teaching experience, and must have completed all state required tests.
Program prerequisites
- A valid Connecticut teaching certificate, or proof of eligibility
- An appropriate regionally accredited master’s degree
- At least two letters of recommendation from persons able to testify to suitability as a prospective teacher and the potential for graduate-level work
- An essay demonstrating a command of the English language and setting out the reasons for wanting to enroll in the program, emphasizing experience relevant to teaching
- A successful interview with the program director
- Completion of at least 30 school months of successful classroom teaching experience
Required materials
- Application
- Official transcripts for each institution attended
- Copy of your Connecticut teaching certificate
- Proof of 30 months of teaching. Your employer should provide documentation on letterhead with a current date.
- Applicants for the 097 certification licensure must hold a 102 CT certification and have completed an additional 10 months of successful classroom teaching with the 102 certification
- International transcripts must include an official course-by-course evaluation of all academic work from www.naces.org.
