In the early 20th century, Bridgeport was one of only six major U.S. cities without a higher education institution. Local educator E. Everett Cortright, dental hygiene founder Dr. Alfred Fones, and industrialist Sumner Simpson united to open educational doors, chartering Connecticut's first junior college on May 5, 1927.

Junior College of Connecticut: Chartered as the first two-year junior college in New England, opening on Fairfield Avenue to prepare students for career leadership.
1939
Move to Seaside Park: President Cortright acquires P.T. Barnum's historic seaside estate on Long Island Sound, establishing our picturesque permanent campus.
1947
Four-Year University Charter: Rechartered by the Connecticut legislature as University of Bridgeport; absorbs Arnold College of Physical Education and Weylister College.
1949
Fones School Merges with UB: The world's first dental hygiene school, established by Dr. Alfred Fones in 1913, joins UB to establish the foundation of our Health Sciences colleges.
1950s
Engineering Partnership with Igor Sikorsky: Aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky collaborates with UB to expand aeronautical, mechanical, and electrical engineering curricula.
1991
America's First University Chiropractic College: UB establishes the nation's first university-based Doctor of Chiropractic program, earning landmark accreditation in 1994.
1997
Pioneering Online Graduate Education: UB launches Connecticut's first fully online master's degree program, setting a regional benchmark for distance education.
2021
Goodwin University Strategic Alliance: UB joins an innovative educational system partnership, preserving our independence while infusing modern resources into labs and facilities.

World's First Dental Hygiene School (1913)
Dr. Alfred Fones and Irene Newman founded the dental hygiene profession in Bridgeport. Connecticut issued the world’s first license to Newman, securing Bridgeport’s place in public health history.
America's First University Chiropractic College (1991)
Under pioneering dean Dr. Frank Zolli, UB created the first university-based chiropractic institution in the United States, raising academic standards and graduating its inaugural class in 1994.
Nation's First Clinical Master's in Human Nutrition
UB inaugurated America’s first clinical Master of Science in Nutrition and became the first program accredited by the Accreditation Council on Nutrition Professional Education (ACNPE).
Connecticut's First Artificial Intelligence Master's
UB introduced the state’s first MS in Artificial Intelligence alongside Fairfield County’s first High-Tech Business Incubator, continuing an engineering heritage begun with Igor Sikorsky.
