Your goals and your degree type

Two degree paths, working hand in hand

UB’s Master of Arts and Master of Science in Biology degree programs offer a contemporary curriculum that emphasizes the principles and experimental approaches of modern biology. Our program is designed with two degree path options built to support the future endeavors of all graduate-level biology students.

Master of Science

For research and terminal degrees

This option emphasizes design and execution of experimental work. You will be required to complete a thesis featuring your original research.

Students in this program will most likely be pursuing terminal degrees following completion. The MS develops the ability to formulate scientific hypotheses, design and execute experiments, collect and interpret data, and publish results.

Master of Arts

For working professionals

This option emphasizes career building. You will have the option of pursuing an internship or completing your degree with coursework only.

The MA develops the ability to integrate knowledge of biology and biological research into occupations in clinical, commercial, or policy settings.

Tracks

Choose a curricular emphasis

We offer curricular tracks that emphasize Molecular Biology, Biomedical Science, or Ecology and Evolution.

Each track allows you to gain deeper knowledge in a category of your choosing.

Benefits to our program

A small program with serious facilities

A small student-to-faculty ratio allows you to work closely with faculty who are active in and recognized for research in the field. You will have the opportunity to learn from and connect with featured guest speakers. Our seaside campus offers state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, and close proximity to leading biotech and pharmaceutical companies creates internship and future employment opportunities.

Curriculum

Your path to program completion

You will study a wide range of biology topics in order to fulfill the credits required for either degree. Throughout your studies you will take courses in three categories: general core, concentration core, and electives. All graduate-level Biology students must pass an oral comprehensive examination covering current theory, application, and research in areas appropriate to their training and interests.

CORE

General and concentration core

A common foundation, then deeper study in molecular biology, biomedical science, or ecology and evolution.

MS

MS: 36 credits plus thesis

Students must submit and defend a research thesis with both a written thesis and oral defense, demonstrating the ability to conduct independent research.

MA

MA: 36 credits plus capstone

Complete 36 credits of coursework in Biology plus either a literature review or an internship, with a recommendation letter from your internship mentor and an internship report.

EXAM

Oral comprehensive exam

Required of all graduate-level Biology students, covering current theory, application, and research.

Careers

Where graduates work

UB’s graduate-level Biology program will prepare you for jobs and terminal degrees requiring highly-trained experts with advanced knowledge in biology and related sciences. You will be competitive for positions in private, academic, and government research institutions and clinical laboratories.

Biotechnology and pharmaceuticals
Research and development roles at the biotech and pharmaceutical companies near our campus.
Government agencies
Positions at agencies including the EPA, OSHA, and FDA.
Colleges and universities
Academic research and teaching, often after a terminal degree.
Environmental and food laboratories
Environmental laboratories, and food processing and safety.
Hospitals and public health
Clinical laboratory and public health roles.
Research management and communication
Private research foundations, research management, museums, publishing, marketing, and sales.
Purpose

What the program prepares you to do

Search, read, and interpret current biological literature; develop an in-depth understanding of a particular area of biology; develop expertise in research methods; and integrate techniques, skills, and scientific principles across sub-disciplines.
