Curriculum

An individualized program of study

The master’s in Mechanical Engineering prepares the student for a successful professional career through advanced study in design, development, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems for a wide range of industries, including transportation, automation, medical, energy generation, electronic, sports, and aerospace.

CORE

Core plus technical electives

The program combines core mechanical engineering courses with technical electives that let you increase your knowledge and competence in essential skills, while affording sufficient freedom for in-depth study in both traditional and contemporary curriculum tracks.

TRACKS

Four technical areas

Manufacturing Engineering and Management. Thermal Fluid Systems and Sustainable Energy. Mechatronics and Automation. Solid Mechanics and Mechanical Design.

PLAN

Your own plan of study

You are required to design an individualized program of study with the help and approval of your faculty advisor, to meet your academic and career goals.

DUAL

Two degrees at once

Customized study plans also allow receiving the MS in Mechanical Engineering while pursuing another MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Technology Management, or an MBA. Dual degree students should consult their respective advisors.

Laboratories

Four department laboratories

The department is the home of the CNC Mini Milling Machine Laboratory, the Computer Aided Engineering and Rapid Prototyping Laboratory, the Applied Computational Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, and the Electronics Thermal Management Laboratory. Students can also access the other laboratories in the School of Engineering. Some classes are taught by adjunct faculty from local industries and faculty from other engineering departments at UB.

Admission requirements

How to apply

The Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering is intended to prepare individuals with a strong mathematical, scientific, or technical background for entry into the Mechanical Engineering field at an advanced level and for further study leading to the doctorate. Admission to the program requires a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering and/or design curriculum. Students with other engineering or science backgrounds can be accepted into the program with the condition that they will make up their deficiencies in the core Mechanical Engineering areas (mechanics of materials, fluid mechanics, heat transfer and thermodynamics, dynamics of mechanical systems, design, and manufacturing) in the MSME program and/or through additional courses.

Program prerequisites

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related STEM field from an accredited university or recognized international institution
  • Recommended cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.90 or higher

Required materials

  • Application
  • Official transcript for the last degree earned
  • To be considered for a scholarship and prerequisite waivers, you must submit transcripts from each institution attended.
  • In certain cases the GRE can be waived based on previous academic performance. After submitting your application and all other required documents you may be admitted without the GRE, or our admissions staff will contact you if the GRE is required for a decision.

STEM and OPT

A STEM-designated degree

The MS degrees offered by the School of Engineering at University of Bridgeport are classified by ICE (US Immigration and Customs Enforcement) as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) degrees. All international students who earn an MS degree are eligible for twelve months of OPT (Optional Practical Training). At the end of those twelve months, the student and the company the student works for can apply for an extension of twenty-four additional months of work, as long as the company is an E-verify company. In summary, a graduate with an MS degree can work under OPT in the USA for a total of thirty-six months. For more information, visit International Student Services.

Program outcomes

What you will be able to do

Students in the Mechanical Engineering master’s program will be able to design or analyze a system, component or process to meet desired needs within realistic, contemporary constraints such as health and safety, ethics, performance, sustainability, and economics.

Advanced technical skills
Develop specialized advanced skills in mechanical engineering fields including fluid mechanics, heat transfer, material science, dynamics, vibrations, numerical methods, design, and manufacturing.
Modern engineering practice
Demonstrate the ability to use techniques, skills and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice, and to create, adapt, transfer and integrate existing and emerging technologies into new products, processes, and services.
Judgment under constraint
Develop decision making, risk assessment and problem-solving skills considering both economic and other constraints.
Communication
Develop both technical and management oral presentation and written communication skills.
Funding

Stipends and scholarships

Financial stipends and scholarships are available for qualified student applicants, including the Graduate Merit Award, which helps deserving students meet the financial obligations of pursuing a graduate degree, along with graduate assistantships, research assistantships, and student employment.
