The international dimensions of public safety

The Criminal Justice and Human Security program requires 39 semester credit hours including 27 credit hours in the program core, 15 credit hours in one of the concentrations, and an additional 6 credit hours in an elective requirement, one course from each of the other two concentrations.

Public safety on a global scale

Public safety professionals work on the front lines all over the globe, making our communities safer. In this program you will develop the skills and experience needed to join a network of domestic and international security experts who understand criminal behavior and its causes.

Classes are taught by police commanders, detectives, state troopers, military veterans, attorneys, and other expert faculty. Their combined experiences and flexible teaching strategies will help you develop the critical thinking skills necessary to work in modern law enforcement.

GLOBAL

Human security

Our program introduces you to the emergence and implications of human security as a dimension of criminal justice, exploring its impact on both domestic and international levels. You will become part of a corps of security professionals who demonstrate the language skills and intercultural understanding required for effective work.

Continuing your study

Based on your performance, you may be eligible for admission to graduate study in Criminal Justice and Homeland Security programs and for careers in domestic and international security. A portfolio is collected to track progress in programmatic outcomes.

Criminal justice careers

ATF agent, CIA agent, Coast Guard officer, corrections officer, crime scene investigation, criminologist, customs agent, DEA agent, FBI agent, INS agent, police officer, probation officer, Secret Service, sheriff, and U.S. marshal.

Critical thinking and communication

Students demonstrate the progressive acquisition of the oral, written and critical thinking skills needed to succeed in graduate level study as well as the required skills for careers in domestic and international security, and are able to identify the essential elements of criminal justice.

Human security

Students are able to articulate the importance of Human Security and explore its impact on domestic and international security.

The causes of crime

Students describe the role played by religious, ideological, and cultural views, ethnic and tribal identities, and economic status in rationalizing criminal behavior; demonstrate an understanding of the role played in criminal behavior by socioeconomic inequities and societal injustice; and comment on the role played by non-state actors in areas such as the identification of norms, the acceptability of violence and terrorism in promoting policy changes, and in preventing crime.
